Online Video for the Camera Shy: How To Be Confident in Front of the Camera

May 14, 2014 by David

When I first started making videos on YouTube, I was worried:

“What if one of my friends discovers my channel? What if a stranger on the Internet says something mean to me? What if make a fool of myself?”

I’d always been the definitive “quiet kid”, so even the idea of making videos was a step out of my comfort zone. The actual practice of it just seemed like an inevitable disaster.

But I had to do it.

Gym Fear: What To Do When You’re Afraid of the Gym

April 23, 2014 by David

For a long time, I was afraid of the gym. To some people, this might sound silly, but as a scrawny computer geek, the idea of walking into a building full of beefed-up man-beasts was an unpleasant one.

Whenever I thought about going to the gym, I couldn’t help but assume:

  • I wouldn’t fit in.
  • I’d hurt myself.
  • I’d embarass myself.

Basically, the gym wasn’t for me because I wasn’t “the sort of person” to visit a gym.

But I desperately wanted to lift weights. I wanted to squat and bench and deadlift, and one day be less of a scrawny computer geek. Even so, there was this gap between how I saw myself and who I wanted to be, and I wasn’t sure how to close that gap.

If all of this sounds familiar, fear not:

I’ve found the solutions.

How To Get 20% Stronger in 7 Days: The Definitive Guide to Creatine Monohydrate

February 27, 2014 by David

I’ve never been a fan of supplements. I take Vitamin D and Fish Oil because they’re the most common deficiencies but I rarely feel different after taking multi-vitamins or those herbal medicines with funny names. (But maybe the difference isn’t meant to be overtly felt? Maybe the magic is more subtle?)

Last year though, after hitting an abrupt wall with my training at the gym, I started to experiment with creatine — a supplement I’d heard a lot about but one that also attracts a lot of critics:

  • “It doesn’t work!”
  • “It’s bad for the kidneys!”
  • “Isn’t creatine a steroid?”

But less than a week into taking the supplement, I could only wonder: why isn’t everyone taking this stuff? Because it wasn’t like most supplements. I could actually feel the difference and it was big.

(And don’t worry, I’ll address the critics soon enough).

International Flight Advice: 8 Tips & Tricks To Always Choose the Best Seat on Any Plane

February 27, 2014 by David

Flying from Honolulu to Sydney

Whether or not I enjoy a flight mostly depends on where I sit, and since I’m mostly flying to and from Australia, choosing the wrong seat can be a painfully long and regretful experience.

To deal with this, I have a system for choosing a seat on any plane that basically guarantees a half-decent flight.

Be warned though: when I say “I’ve developed a system,” that’s not meant to be taken lightly.

My checklist is precise, dorky, and neurotic, but since it works, I don’t particularly mind if I’m a little obsessed with my preferences.
